The collapse of their batting cost Wellington the Beatty Cup in a softball challenge against Auckland at Athletic Park, Wellington, on Saturday aftenioon, Auckland winning 4-0. The challengers took an early lead. Play was spirited, and both sides fielded well, the Auckland pitcher, B. Wareham, being conspicuous.—(P.A.)
Speedboat Record Driving his speedboat Redhead through rain, in poor visibility, the New Zealander, L. Southward, broke the Australian flying mile power-boat record of 82.6 miles an hour over the St George Motor-Boat Club’s mile course at Sans Souci on the George’s river. Southward made his recordbreaking run at his third attempt, when his times were 84.906 miles an hour and 85.06 miles an hour, respectively, for his run up the course and back. The record had previously been held by the Sydney boat Sunray II — Sydney, March 13,
