Living In Fools’ Purgatory
(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON. March 13.
The condition of Britain’s defences was lamentable, said Mr Churchill, in a message to Lieutenant-Colonel Paid Payan, Conservative candidate in the Sowerby by-elec--1 ion.
“The Socialists are making us live in a fools’ purgatory upon tiie generous grant ol free - enterprise capitalistic Am,erica,” Mr Churchill said. 4‘We live in a time of great anxiety, both about our national safety and our means of earning our independent livelihood in the modern world. Grievous injuries have been suffered by the British Empire and Commonwealth of Nations.
“Although Parliament has given the Government the right to enforce compulsory service in the armed forces and although vast sums of money have been voted to equip and maintain them, the condition of our defences is lamentable. Never was so much man-power used for so little result in security.”
