Wire-Tapping Plot Alleged By Police In New York City
(Rec. 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, March 13
The Mayor, Mr O’Dwyer, of New York, stated that the police discovered a plot to obtain official city secrets by tapping telephone wires. Later the New York district attorney announced that he would send the evidence of the plot to the grand jury. The police arrested two alleged wire-tappers, but one of them, a retired detective, has since escaped from custody. He excused himself while being questioned at the City Hall and escaped out of the washroom window.
City Hall officials said that inquiries into wire-tapping might involve prominent political enemies of Mayor O’Dwyer. Police Commissioner O’Brien has alleged that a lawyer hired two men to tap the City Hall ©wires. He has .subpoenaed the lawyer to appear before the grand jury. According to the Mayor, the lawyer has admitted that a millionaire employed him to get information about the city government. City officials say that the wiretapping plot involves other cities.
