LAWN TENNIS Baddeley Retains Singles Title At Coast Tourney

J.’ Baddeley,. of Palmerston North and formerly of Runanga, repeated his last year’s performance to win the men’s singles title when the West Coast Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship tournament was played at Greymouth on Saturday and again yesterday. The runner-up was W. Stagg (Buller), Baddeley winning ih three sets, 6-2; 5-7, 6-3. .Miss O. Stapleton (Hokitika), last year’s women’s singles champion, also successfully defended her title when she defeated Mrs M. Holt (Greymouth) ih the final, 6-4, 6-3. The tournament was conducted in fine weather and play was of an exceptionally high standard. Record entries, totalling 225, were received by the association and a large programme of matches was put .through during the two days’ play. The tournament, however, was not completed yesterday, and matches in the mixed doubles event will be played at the Greymouth club’s courts next Saturday. Many Surprises Saturday’s play was full of surprises and one of the outstanding features of the tournament was the early elimination of all except one, of the seeded players by outside competitors. One of the major upsets was the defeat, in the second round, of one of last year’s semi-finalists, M. Thomas, by the young Canterbury player, W. L. Hewitt, 9-8. After having comparatively easy wins in the first two rounds of the men’s doubles, last year’s title-holders, Baddeley and R. Mitchell, were eliminated in the third round by Stagg and A. Luff (Buller), who subsequently won the final,. beating the Greymouth pair, H. C. Hill and E. Pattinson 6-4, 8- after one of the most exciting matches of the .tournament. Miss Stapleton, partnered by Mrs Butland (Hokitika) was too strong for the second Hokitika pair, Mrs Cowdry and Miss Carter, in the final of the women’s doubles, winning comfortably, 6-0, 6-4. Some good tennis was seen in the final of the boys’ singles in which J. Lynch (Greymouth), after being down 8-7, defeated S. Pollock (Cobden) 9-8. Miss S. BEATS NEW ZEALAND IN TEST MATCH

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 27. Although the touring New South Wales lawn tennis team beat New Zealand in the unofficial test match at Wilding Park by 9 rubbers to 3, the home players did much better on the second day—very nearly as well as in the first match at Wellington a fortnight ago, when the visitors won only on a count of sets, the six rubbers being shared. The Australians again had only a slight margin of superiority on Saturday. New Zealand won two of the six matches scheduled for the day, as well as the uncompleted doubles in which O. M. Bold and J. A. Barry had built up a commanding lead against O. W. Sidwell and R. McCarthy on Friday, when rain interrupted play. The same New Zealand pair got to within a point of beating D. Rocavert and J. Matthews, only to lose a grandly-fought match; and the result of the second singles match might easily have been in favour of New Zealand instead of Australia had R. S. McKenzie clinched the first set, in which he held three set points.

Apart from the “might-have-beens,” New Zealand has reason for satisfaction in the win of the Davis Cup pair, McKenzie and J. E. Robson, over Sidwell and McCarthy, and Bold’s victory—the sole New Zealand success in the singles—over Rocavert. Results:— Singles O. W. Sidwejl (N.S.W.) beat J. E. Robson (N.Z.), 6-1, 6-2. . . R. McCarthy (N.S.W.) beat R. S. McKenzie (N.Z.), 8-6, 6-4. O. M. Bold (N.Z.) beat D. Rocavert (N.S.W.), 4-6, 10-8, 6-2. J. Matthews (N.S.W.) beat J. A. Barry (N.Z.), 6-3, 9-7. Doubles Robson and McKenzie (N:Z.) beat Sidwell and McCarthy (N.S.W.), 6-2; 6Rovavert and Matthews (N.S.W.) beat Bold and Barry (N.Z.), 7-5, 2-6, 7Bold and Barry (N.Z.) beat Sidwell and McCarthy (N.S.W.), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
