OFF-COURSE BETTING BY ’PHONE
The plan of legalised off-course betting recommended by the Royal Commission makes provision for those who desire to Back their fancy by telephone. The totalisator offices or agencies established throughout the Dominion will have ample telephone facilities. They will be open PRIOR TO and on the day of the race meeting, and the person who wishes to telephone bets has merely to lodge cash in advance to cover his likely requirements, he may, of course, bet against winnings also. Alternatively, he can invest by post or call at the office and buy his ticket.
Once the new system is operating investors will find it convenient and efficient, and the initial closing time of 1 hour to 1| hours before the race is due to start, will be progressively reduced. In England, Tote Investors, Ltd., who, for 30 years have operated vbry successfully pn a somewhat similar principle, close down a few minutes before the starting time of each race and transmit investments to the totalisator on the racecourse. —(Issued by New Zealand Racing and Trotting Conferences).
