SPEAKER AT WOMEN’S MEETING DESCRIBES TOUR OF AUSTRALIA
An account of her recent visit to Australia and a description of the Sydney Harbour, with homes in the bays, and of various places of interest was given by Mrs F. A. Kitchingham at the fortnightly meeting of the Greymouth branch of the Pan Pacific Women’s Association. Winyard underground station, with its shopping centre lit by fluorescent lighting, Martin Place in the centre of the city, the Cenotaph decorated every day by relatives of those whom it commemorates, the State library with its floor of mosaic representing an Abel Tasman chart, the State Lottery building, the large shops with their magnificent displays of goods and in particular, the food and fruit shops where grapes were never more than one shilling a bunch were all vividly described by the speaker. Mrs Kitchingham gave a brief description of her trip on the Hawkesbury river, and also of her visit to the Genolan caves, where the Imperial Cave surpassed anything she had seen. Mrs kitchingham also described the lay-out of Canberra, which had been called “an architect’s dream.” Mrs Kitchingham continued by describing her journey to Melbourne on the “Spirit of Progress”- train which travelled at speeds up to 80 m.p.h. Melbourne, with its beautiful buildings and wide streets, was described as “a lovely city to live in.” Mrs G. Lowes presided at the meeting.
