WELLINGTON TOBACCO FACTORY BUILDING GUTTED BY FIRE
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The top floor of a three-storey factory building in Edward street, Wellington, was gutted by fire early this morning.
Bursting through the roof with almost explosive suddenness shortly after 1 a.m., the flames shot 50 feet or so into the air. The building was occupied by the bonded factory of the St James Tobacco Cojnpany, which recently began manufacturing cigarettes for the New Zealand market. Within a half-hour of the brigade’s, arrival the fire was well under control and an hour after the alarm was given there was little sign of fire. A large section of the top floor of the building was completely destroyed and portion of the second floor also suffered, while the ground floor and a section of the second floor of the furniture factory behind was badly damaged by water.
