ROAD IMPROVEMENTS IN REEFTON DISTRICT SOUGHT
[SPECIAL TO STAR] WESTPORT, This Day.
A plea for highway improvements in the Inangahua area and particularly on the main Greymouth-West-port highway, was made by Mr P. J. O’Regan, of Reefton, when at yesterday’s meeting of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association at Westport, he spoke in support of remits submitted by the Inangahua County Council. . x . The remits urged the association to press for the early commencement of the widening of the Rahu saddle, the elimination of the Reefton saddle on the Greymouth-Westport State highway, and the elimination of the combined rail and traffic bridges on the latter section, with an alternative of erecting warning devices. Mr O’Regan said that accidents had occurred on the bridges and the position at Larry’s creek and the Landing was serious. He said, that extra traffic on the roads mentioned made them difficult to negotiate at times, especially when there was snow on the Rahu saddle. Mr D. H. Cockburn (a member of the Main Highways Board) said the board would be visiting the West Coast on or about November 15 and he would see that the members were given every opportunity to view the places mentioned by Mr O’Regan. All the remits were adopted.
