HARBOUR BOARDS AND INTERFERENCE WITH THEIR WORK

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. Removal of the control on coastal shipping was urged by delegates attending the annual conference of the Harbours’ Association of New Zealand, the following motion being carried: — . “That this conference is in favour of the control of shipping being discontinued.” Mr E. A. Millward (Wanganui) said his board felt that as this control was a war-time regulation no Useful purpose was now being served by the controller; in fact, at present it was a decided disadvantage to the smaller board—if not to all ports. The position could well be left to the shipowners, said Mr C. B. Tapley (Bluff). The companies could provide the service better than could the controller. It was in the national interest that control be relaxed as it had served its purpose. Control had been a serious handicap to the South Island. Mr W. H. Price, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, was reelected president of the association. The chairman of the Auckland, Lyttelton and Otago Boards Messrs J. Melling, C. W. Tyler and AV. R. Cldrke —were" re-elected vice-presi-dents. Messrs T. F. Doyle (Bluff), E. J. Uerrick (Napier). A. R. Kingsford (Nelson)* J. L. Campbell (New Plymouth), and R. S. Goodman (Timaru) wete re-elected to the executive.
