Passenger and Cargo Ships
A clause in the Finance Bill introduced in the House of Representatives yesterday gives the Marine Department authority to operate cargo and passenger ships and to insure cargo. In answer to an Opposition inquiry whether this provision meant the taking over of the Lyttelton steamer express service, the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) replied in the negative. He said it was required for the Stewart Island ferry service, ahd perhaps for the Matai and the Pamir. —(P.A.)
