Fields For Tomorrow Reviewed .

The betting on the Wellington Handicap, of £3500, the principal event on the Wellington Racing Club’s first-day card at Trentham tomorrow, is likely to take a wide range, for there is an abundance of good form among the 28 horses engaged—material enough for one of the best races of the year. . Assessing Kartikeya’s chance, the form of the Finis colt at Washdyke last week can be discounted entirely, and as a winner of the Great Autumn Handicap, in form he must be accorded a chance second to none.

The top-weight Signal Officer has been awarded 10.3, the highest impost evei’ given a horse in this race, but there is no doubt about his class and the Southland trainer, R. McLellan, will send him to the post fit and well. Valley Boy’s third last week at Auckland was full of merit and with 9.4 he must have a chance. Among the others with recent good form in their favour are Ballinagh, Liebestraum, Welcome Guest, and Coral Arc, and though Royal Tan has not started since August he is a good handicap horse. The principal fancies may be Kartikeya, Liebestraum, and Valley Boy.

Beau Vite Colt

The Beau Vite colt, Liebestraum, a son of that good mare Serenata, appears to be destined for the highest honours, and he was distinctly unlucky at Masterton last week to have to accept second place to Welcome Guest. He finished brilliantly over the 11-furlong journey. That followed an impressive success at Hastings. Valley Boy was finishing on over 11 furlongs at Ellerslie last week to run third to Frontier Mac and Conspiracy. He is a class horse over a distance, and would probably have had to carry a slightly greater impost but for the presence of Signal Officer.

Ballinagh is reported to be fast approaching the form which carried him to success at Riccarton in August and won him a name as a coming handicapper. He was checked badly at Masterton last week, and his sixth there was not a true indication of his ability. Welcome Guest is something of a problem horse. He has had the reputation of disliking racing in fields, but his new owners, Mrs L. Campbell and J. H. Jefferd, have been patient with' him and he won like a good horse at Masterton, though he ran in under the whip in the straight and checked at least two other runners. That might suggest that he had had enough, but the race should improve him, and as a horse with recent form and solid breeding

(Royal Chief—Clarenceuse), he must be given a chance.

Coronach Horse

Coral Arc, by Coronach from Barbacan, was having his first start in open company when he won at Washdyke last week, and altogether it was a most attractive performance. On the minimum (he incurred no penalty) he must be respected and he appeals as the best of those below Bst.

Other feature races on . the card are the Wannui Handicap, the Shorts Handicap, the Wellesley Stakes (two-year-olds), and the Desert Gold Stakes (three-year-old fillies). The following horses should race prominently:—

Glen Hurdles.— Master Raymond, Griffin, Mesalliance. Wainui Handicap.—Sweet Nymph, Winter Sweet, Maryburn. Desert Gold Stakes. —Champagne, Demure, Flying Sovereign. Rimutaka Hack.—Super, Outlook, Sly Gold. Wellington Handicap.—Kartikeya, Liebestraum, Valley Boy. Wellesley Stakes.—First Division: Talent, Pictagain, Joycette. Second Division: Super Snipe, Golden Spa, Caronia.

Shorts Handicap. — Excellency, False Step, Trafalgar Day. October Hack.—The Grate, Helio, Fighting Fox.

Auckland Scratchings

Scratchings posted yesterday for the second day of the Auckland Racing Club spring meeting were: Hobson Handicap, Royal Glimpse, at 11.5'a.m.; Rare Fox at 11.45 a.m.; Bainbridge Pat, at 2.50 p.m. Spring Handicap, Honora, at 12.50 p.m.

May Make Amends Master Dorset had Iris chances extinguished at the start of the Eastbrook Handicap at Wanganui last Saturday through a mix-up which also involved Tyrone Power, Old Scotch, Loyal Globe and Wattle Boy, the last-named falling and losing his driver. Master Dorset declined his latei- engagement but may make amends on the second day.
