COURT DELAYS ARE “INTOLERABLE”: NO MAGISTRATE
The unsatisfactory position in which the West Coast has been placed as a result of the lack of a resident magistrate, was again discussed by Greymouth citizens at the annual meeting of the Westland Progress League last evening. Describing the delays in court procedure as intolerable, Mr F. A. Kitchingham moved that the league urge the Government to assign the next appointment to the magisterial bench, to this district on the understanding that he would serve in this district for a period not less than five years. “Any man appointed magistrate, should be prepared to serve his apprenticeship down here” added Mr Kitchingham. “We have to live among the men coming before us and, while I try to be as lenient as possible, I think a magistrate is the man for the job,” said Mr J. H. North J.P., who in seconding the motion complained at the number of calls which, in the absence of a magistrate, had to be made on justices of the peace. The motion was adopted unanimously.
