PUBLIC COLLECTION FOR DEFENCE OF ACCUSED PERSON
(P.A.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. Two charges of attempted murder, involving his wife, Sadie Davey, and Thomas Sands, were preferred against Cecil Edward Davey, aged 38, of Manawatu Heads, Foxton, in the Magistrate’s Court this morning. The charges related to shooting at the accused’s house on September 11. Thp accused was represented by Dr. O. C. Mazengarb. Evidence was given by the children of the accused, who were living with their mother apart from the father and in the house of Sands, showed that the small daughter went to the father’s house and was heard crying by her brother. The brother, in evidence, said he called his mother after an altercation at the accused’s house and the father’s refusal to let the daughter go to her mother.
Mrs Davey, said the witness, smashed windows in the accused’s house and the accused then thrust a shot-gun out of a window and fired. In the meantime, Sands had been called by witness and the accused also used the shot-gun on him. The case has created unusual interest at Manawatu Heads where funds for the defence of the accused were raised by public subscription. The hearing is proceeding.
