Howe’s Excellent Trial For The Caulfield Cup

MELBOURNE, October 10.

The easy win of the New Zealander, Howe, in the Herbert Power Handicap at Caulfield has greatly strengthened his chances for the Caulfield Cup. He carried 9.2, which is six pounds more than he will draw in the cup, run over the same distance, next Saturday. The result was hooted by some punters, who could not reconcile his finish with that shown in the Turnbull Stakes. Howe had the race under control from the start and moved away at will. Saxonian tried to lead all the way, but Howe cut him down at leisure. During the race Howe sustained a slight cut on a leg, which is stated to be Superficial. His trainer, H. C. Nesbit, said that Howe was always a better proposition in handicaps than at weight-for-age, and that though the field he beat was not first-class, his connections were optimistic about the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.
