EXPORT VALUES EXCEED IMPORTS BY £4,723,000

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 10, The trade balance for July was favourable to. the extent of compared with an unfavourable balance of £608,000 in July, 1947. For the 12 months ended July, 1948, there was a surplus of export values over imports of £4,723,000, compared with £26,893,000 for the 12 months ended on July 31, 1947. July was the last complete month on the basis of the old exchange.. For the seven months of the year exports totalled £104,218,000 and imports £ 19,404,000. Both totals exceeded the figures for JanuaryJuly, 1947, which were £84,648,000 and £63,876,000 respectively. These figures were given by the Minister of Customs (Mr Nash) tonight. As between two seven-monthly periods, this year and last year, the value of exports had increased at a rate slightly more than the rate of increase in the value of imports, with the result that the favourable balance for the first seven months of the year stood at £24,814,000—4,042,000 higher than for the same period last year, and £1,265,000 above 1946, Mr Nash said.
