CAUSTIC SODA IN HOLY WATER:SEVERE BURNS SUFFERED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Police inquiries are being made in Wellington into the action of some person last Sunday in putting caustic soda into the holy water stoups at the Catholic Church of St. Mary of the Angels, in Boulcott street. Several members of the congregation attending Benediction suffered severe burns to the forehead when making the Sign of the Cross, but fortunately, none of the water got into the eyes of any who used the stoups. If it had, it might have caused severe inflammation or even blindness. •
The first public reference to what had happened was made from the pulpit of the church this morning, when the Rev. Father Paul Kane said it had been established that the caustic soda had been put into the water some time on Sunday afternoon. He asked parishioners to give any information they had on the matter to the police. It is a custom among Catholics to make the Sign of the Cross with holy water as they enter and as they leave the church, first dipping their fingers into the water stoups. Such an offence had not previously been heard of in Wellington, and police officers have been specially assigned to the investigation. _
