RELIGIOUS CENSUS IN NEW ZEALAND

Returns in the latest Now Zealand Year Book show that between 1936 and 1945 the Catholic Church gained 20,368 adherents. In the same period the members of the Methodist Church increased by 9208, Presbyterians by 7101 and members of the Church of England by 1000. Comparative totals of adherents to these churches in 1936 and 1945 were: —Roman Catholic, 195.261 and 215,629; Presbyterian, 367,855 and 374,956; Church of England, 600,786 and 601,786. Persons who objected to stating their religion when the 1945 censps was taken totalled 126,462 compared with 71,302 in 1936. In 1926 the number was 62,585. Those who were more definite in the 1945 census and said they had no religion - totalled 11,038, an increase of 6746 on the figure for 1936. Atheists increased from 599 to 1654 in the same period.
