LIMITED FISHING GROUNDS OFF WEST COAST, IS REPORT

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The prospects of developing fishing grounds on the West Coast of the South Island were discussed by Mr D. C. Bennie, manager of the fish section of the National Mortgage and Agency Company. Mr Bennie returned to Dunedin last night in the trawler Taiaroa, which left for the Jackson’s Bay area last Tuesday. During the visit to West Coast waters more time was spent in testing the sea bed for trawling possibilities than looking for fish. The echometer charts brought back by Mr Bennie reveal that there are some suitable areas for trawling operations. Mr Bennie added, however, that the extent of the grounds appeared to be limited and, although the West Coast might provide a valuable source of supply for certain varieties of fish, too much reliance could not be placed on the area. It would be a mistake to think that the quantities of fish forthcoming from West Coast waters would appreciably affect the supply position in the main centres, he said.
