Competitions In Greymouth Opened Today
The Greymouth Competitions Society opened its 34th annual festival at Greymouth this morning, when events were held in the Wesley, St John’s, and Columba halls. Entries in all events are good and the standard of work is high. The judges are: Vocal and instrumental, Mr H. Temple-White (Wellington); dancing, Miss Isa McKenzie (Palmerston North); elocution, Mrs Matthew Teward (Wellington). The competitions will be officially opened by the Mayor of Greymouth, Mr F. F. Boustridge, at the Wesley Hall this evening. The festival will continue until Thursday, when a demonstration concert will be given by the winners in the Regent Theatre. Results of this morning’s events are as follows: —
Vocal And Instrumental Piano Duet (boy and/or girl, 14 years and under). —Betty Reynolds and Maire Murray (Greymouth), 1; Pauline Hartshorne and Marie Anderson (Greymouth), 2; Janice Meikle and Anne Fahey (Greymouth), 3. Five competitors. Song (boy or girl, under 10 years). —Barbara M. White (Cobden), 1; Mary Greenhill (Greymouth), 2; John L. Watson (Greymouth), 3. Nine entrants. Piano Solo (boy or girl, over 14 and under 18). —Joan Wrobleski (Hokitika), 1; Anne Eadie (Greymouth), 2; Ellen Shearer (Hokitika), 3. Five competitors. Tenor Solo (test). — Recalls: Thomas Menzies (Runanga) and James Laughton (Cobden); Reginald W. Bryant (Greymouth) was third. Seven competitors. Instrumental Solo (any brass instrument). —Recalls: Joseph Harper (Taylorville), Ivan Emmerson. Norman Gardner was third. Twelve competitors. Highland Fling (10 and under 13). —Valerie Fraser (Waltham), 1; Marlene Smith (Christchurch), 2; Annette Deidrichs (Hokitika), 3. Seventeen competitors. Operatic Dance (under 10) .—Recalls: Jillian E. Hayden (Woolston), Gillian Fathers (Sumner), and Pearl P. Calder (Cobden). Fourteen competitors.
