England Dismissed For 52 In Final Test
LONDON, August 14.
England was dismissed for S2 on the first day of the fifth test match against Australia at the Oval. Only Bradman’s failure — he was bowled out for a duckdulled the lustre of Australia’s magnificent cricket. England won the toss. At the end of the day, Australia, with two down for 153, led England by 101 runs. The stars of the day were Lindwall, with six wickets for 20, and Morris and Barnes, whose opening partnership of 117 made Australia’s position almost unassailable. The opening batsmen equalled England’s total of 52 in even time. Although Hollies, who dismissed Barnes for 61 and Bradman for a duck, sometimes troubled Morris, the left-hander was unbeaten at stumps, with 77 on the board. Ovation for Bradman
The crowd gave Bradman an extraordinary ovation. The 30,000 spectators rose as one man and cheered him all the way to the wicket. Then Yardley called for three cheers from his men as a tribute to a spectacular captain in his farewell test. There was sympathetic applause when Bradman surveyed his shattered wicket after his second ball, a googly from Hollies, slipped past his bat. England’s total of 52 on a soft, easy wicket, was the lowest an English team had ever made at home. It was the second lowest score on record by an English team. The teams are: —
England.— N. W. D. Yardley (captain), L. Hutton, J. G. Dewes, W. J. Edrich, D. C. S. Compton, J. F. Crapp, A. Watkins, T. G. Evans, A. V. Bedser, J. A. Young, E. Hollies. Twelfth man: R. T. Simpson. Australia. — D. G. Bradman (captain), A. L. Hassett, S. G. Barnes, A. R. Morris, K. Miller, S. J. E. Loxton, R. N. Harvey, D. Tallon, D. Ring, R. R. Lindwall, W. Johnston. Twelfth man: I. Johnson.
The English batsmen could not blame the wind or the weather for their failure. It was caused solely by Lindwall’s devastating bowling. He had never bowled better in England. When Dewes, Edrich, Compton and Crapp were out for a total contribution of eight, Lindwall demoralised
the remaining batsmen with his accuracy, swerve and sheer speed. In 49 balls after lunch, he secured five wickets for eight. Hutton, the last man out, managed to score only 30 runs.
