PUBLIC SERVICE APPEALS: MR FRASER’S ASSURANCE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, August 14. The general secretary of the Public Service Association (Mr J. Turnbull) said today that the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) had assured the association that the Government had not considered any legislation affecting the appeal rights of public servants.

The Prime Minister met the association’s leaders on Wednesday and stated that there was no present intention to amend the Act, and if at any time the Government did propose an amendment, the association would be given the fullest opportunity for consideration and consultation. The association had been very pleased to receive this assurance, Mr Turnbull said. The jealousy with which public servants defended the present appeal board system as a sheet anchor appeal against political influence in appointments and promotions dated back to the preMassey date of Ministerial control of the service, said Mr Turnbull.
