FINE WEATHER IS. LIKELY FOR RACES TOMORROW

[SPECIAL TO STAlt] CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The weather is again, fipe today after a severe frost and there is every prospect of similar conditions for tomorrow’s races. The track will provide firmer going than last Saturday, but it will still be slightly holding. Lisheen will not start in the Grand. National Hurdles, and Tenorman and First Out will be missing from the Beaufort Steeplechase. Leigh Barton pulled up very lame after working this morning and will probably be out of commission for some time. Of those with two engagements Foreign Ways and Grand Coulee are likely to start in the Spreydon Hurdles; Revolte will contest the Islington Handicap, and Rival Chase the Woolston Handicap. Additional or amended riding en- . gagements include: J. Nicholson, Forage; H. Phillips, Coatham; B. Thomson, Bobby Dazzler; A. C. Messervy, Screw Picket; N. Cavaney, Post Graduate; W. Kitto, Wavelock; R. Collett, Corineus, Fine Night; W„ Skelton, Siegtone, Tarmac; C. Cassidy, Flying Fort; M. Jones, Assault; B. Southee, Scuttle, The Grate; ; C. Stokes, Beau Ideal; B. J. Langford, Foreign Ways; F. Langford, Grand Coulee. Unlucky Runner Ballinagh was a trifle unlucky not to win the Paparua Handicap at Ric - carton last week, for he came “from the clouds” to just fail to overhaul Lord Elgin, who had been the first to move and who was well placed all the way. It would almost appear as though the extra furlong of the Winter Cup would have been very much to the liking of the chestnut. Finished Well The Grate, a five-year-old mare by Salmagundi from Trivet, the latter being a half-sister to Kerbside, the dam of Flearth, came home particularly well in the Avonhead Hack • Handicap at Riccarton last week after being last to move. She should make amends at the meeting. Riccarton Scratchings The Aylesbury Handicap at Riccarton tomorrow is certain to be run in. divisions. Two and three scratchings respectively are needed to avoid divisions in the Sumner and the Woolston. Hack Handicaps. The only scratchings yesterday were Whiphand in the Beaufort Steeplechase at 2.10 p.m. and Harley in the Aylesbury Handicap at 4.30 p.m. Riders for Hastings Riding engagements for Hastings include: V. J. Sellars, Queen’s Parade, Miss Ozel; AV. L. Aitken, Battle Survey, Lord Phrosa; T. Poad, Allisloper.
