Perpetual Attractive Victory At Ashburton

[SPECIAL TO STAR] ASHBURTON, This Day. ~ The Springfield Globe filly, Perpetua, who comes from a highly successful family, won the New Zealand Sapling Stakes with an impressive finishing effort, after she had been headed in the straight. The unlucky horse of the race was Merrymaker, who was interfered with by Chamfer’s boring in under pressure in the straight when being challenged by Merrvmaker. Chamfer finished, second, "a length away from Perpetua, with Merrymakei* three lengths away, and then came Sea Pirate. Black Diamond, Our Flicka and Globe Theatre. After an inquiry instituted by the stipendiary stewards Chamfer was disqualified for the race for interfering with Merrymaker and M. Holmes, driver of Chamfer, was fined £ 20. Jason's Quest, which finished third to Java and Jimmy Scott in the Stewards’ Handicap on the first day, gave an outstanding performance to win the Mayfield Handicap easily from the favourite, Java. Jimmy Wharton and then. Swanee River set, the pace in the early stages, ana with a mile to go they were followed bv Sandy Duval, Billy McElwyn, Jimmy Scott, Kathleen’s Voyage, Gold Weed. Morning Wings, Java and Jason’s Quest. Swanee River . was still in the lead as the field straightened up for the sprint home, where Sandy Duval. Jimmy Scott, Jason s Quest. Paul Parrish and Java were all prominent.
