Unlucky Runner At Hutt Park Was Lady Averil

Lady Averil was an unlucky runner at Hutt Park on Saturday and the six-year-old Dillon Hall mare will be one of the best supported in her races on the second day of the meeting on Saturday. In the principal event, the R. A. Armstrong Memorial Handicap, she was one of the outsiders of the field and finished particularly fast into second place behind Ace of Diamonds, though she hardly looked like overhauling McTigue’s candidate. Produced again in the Royal Handicap, Lady Averil was elevated considerably in the betting and she was unlucky to have to strike her colours to Coral Princess. Lady Averil was well back in seventh place with six furlongs to run but she then unwound a strong finishing run which carried her into second place behind Coral Princess. Better placed in the middle stages she would have more than troubled the winner.

Lady Averil has done most, of her racing in the colours of the late F. J. Smith and since his death she has been trained by C. Smith for Mr R. Lewis. She is engaged on Saturday in the Wairarapa and Electric Handicaps and she must be accorded a good chance of success.

Unlikely Starters Melton and Special Merit, which are trained at Ashburton by D. L. McGregor, are unlikely starters at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Consistent Trotter

Logan Max, the runner-up to Buncrana in the Temuka Handicap at. the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on March 6, will have his next race at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting in the Army Handicap, in which he will meet Buncrana on 72 yards better terms. Logan Max, which is trained at Addington by J. Young, has been placed in four of his last five starts and a winning turn for him should not be far away. Balloted Out

To reduce the fields to the safety limit at .the Cheviot Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, the following horses were balloted out:—Trial Handicap: Agnes de Oro, Ben’s Son, Bonny Gold, Charmy Downs, Captain Kinder, Dainty Dorrie, Direct Edition, Farnborough, Hall Vale, Highland Chief, Loyal Hand, Loyal Man, Master Gamble, Pocket Money, Sandy Chimes, Saxon Star, Sir Gamble, Sir John, Sirocco, Tyrone Power. Domett Handicap: Bashaw, Bold Salute, Bonny Jim, Cash Bond, Lee Volo, President, Steel Sword, Stray Shot, Thrustaway. Spotswood Handicap: Big Bay, Bromley Lad, Empire Girl, Esperanto, Gloxania, Lumberman, Mobile Globe. Bollard Memorial Hanidcap: Adventurer, Alandale, Wairiri Girl. Parnassus Handicap: Minstrel Hall. Great Blaze Sold

The Jack Potts stallion Great Blaze was bought by Mr W. E. Jelley, of Cromwell, for 255gns at a sale of trotting stock of the estate of the late j. L. Thomson, at Brydone, recently. Other sales were: —Sterling Fund (Quite Sure— Sterling McKinney), with Red Shadow filly at foot and served by Great Blaze, M. Ischia, Christchurch, 50gns; Mystery (Worthy Bond—Nelson Bingen m.), with Red Shadow colt at foot and served by Great Blaze, W. L. Bagrie, Blryctone, 52igns. Unpopular with Some On account of her failure to complete the course in the big race, the success of Coral Princess in the Royal Handicap at Hutt Park on Saturday was not popular with a section of the crowd, but a broken sulky and a badly-knocked wheel were the cause of her being pulled up early in the main contest. Always well placed in the final event, the Pacing Power mare just managed to survive a determined late challenge by Lady Averil.

Sydney Sales Record An Australian record was established at the Sydney yearling sales, which ended yesterday, buyers spending 280,315 guineas during the four days of the auction. The aggregate was 17,834 guineas better than the previous record in 1946. This year, however, 515 yearlings were sold for an average of just over 544 guineas, as against the average of 704 J- guineas in 1946. Yesterday only four sales of 1000 guineas or more were recorded, the top price of 2000 guineas being paid for a chestnut colt by Roger - stone Castle from Maid of Athens. — Sydney, April 6.
