VICTORIA MAY BAN COMMUNIST PARTY

MELBOURNE, April 6. The Victorian State Country Party leader (Mr J. S. McDonald! told a Country Party conference today that the party would not stay in the Victorian Government unless the Government dealt effectively with Communists. He added that the Labour Party had “failed miserably,” and that the combined Liberal and Country Party Government must deal with the menace. When Labour lost the Victorian election last year on the Banking Act issue, the Opposition parties formed a Coalition Government under Mr T. T. Hollway. This Government put down the transport strike mainly by using legislation, against unlawful stoppages. Recent reports suggest that Mr Hollway is contemplating the complete banning of the Communist Party and suppression of its newspaper.
