SOVIET ATOMIC CONTROL PLAN IS REJECTED
(Rec. 1.1') p.m.) NEW YORK, April 5. The working committee of the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission today voted, by nine .votes to two, not to continue discussion on the Soviet proposals for international control of atomic energy. The Soviet and the Ukraine voted against the following resolution, which was introduced by Mr Richard Miles (Britain), on behalf of Britain, China, France, and Canada: — , “Because the Soviet proposals ignore the existing technical knowledge of the problem of atomic energy control, do not provide an adequate basis for effective international control of atomic energy and the elimination from national armaments of atomic weapons, and, therefore, do not conform with the commission’s terms of reference, the working committee concludes that no useful purpose can be served by further discussion of these proposals in the working committee.” The commission is expected .to meet later this month to decide z whether to continue its attempts to work out world atomic control plans or wind up its work.
