PLAYGROUND OPENED AS BLAKETOWN WAR MEMORIAL
Containing swings, a sand pit. paddling pool, slide and other similar equipment, a playground established in Reid street, Blaketown, under the sponsorship of the Advance Blaketown League, was officially opened on Saturday when it was dedicated as a war memorial. It is planned to provide a drinking font in the playing area at a later date, and the names of the district residents who fell during the recent war will be inscribed on the column. The playground was officially opened on Saturday by the deputymayor, Cr J. E., Stokes, who, with Mr G. Batty, vice-president of the R.S.A., complimented the residents of the suburb on- their community spirit. The chairman of the Advance Blaketown League, Mr F .McEnaney, - replied, thanking those who had assisted in the project. There was a large attendance, and’ the children in the gathering were given free sweets and ice cream, after which a sports programme was held.
