Successful Sports Meeting Held By West Coast Centre

The West Coast Centre of the N.Z. Athletic, Cycling, and Axemen’s Union held its annual sports meeting at Victoria Park, Greymouth, on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal. Good times were recorded in the various chopping and cycling events and all were keenly contested. There was a good attendance at the meeting. Greymouth riders gained their share of the major placings in most of the cycling events, winning three of the five handicap races. The main race, however, the two mile handicap event, was won by the Canterbury cyclist, H. Sutherland, in the good time of 4min 39sec. Another Canterbury rider, K. Johnston, filled second place, while G. Armstrong, of Greymouth, was third. The Greymouth Cycling Club’s half-mile junior championship was annexed by K. Sutherland, also of Canterbury, with the Greymouth riders, J. Alexander and E. Patterson, filling second and third places. The Sam McAra Cup, for the rider gaining the most points during the afternoon, went to H. Sutherland, with six points. Good entries were received in the 'various chopping events and were followed keenly. The main chop, the 14-inch underhand handicap, which was run in three heats, was won by J.
