WHARF UNION AND PORT COMMITTEE

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, April 4. No meetings of the Auckland Port Committee, an organisation set up under the Waterfront Industry Emergency Regulations to handle local disputes in the port, will be held until the Auckland branch of the Waterside Workers’ Union again agrees to permit its representatives to attend. The union’s action was determined in a resolution approved last month. The committee was appointed in August, 1946, and consists of three representatives of the employers and three of the union, with the branch manager of the commission (Mr W. J. Cuthbert) as chairman. Its function is to deal with any dispute or difference and its decisions are binding. For about a .fortnight, local disputes have been settled on the job, or have been referred to the commission. Mr Cuthbert visited Wellington last week. For the first time since it was reconstituted, the full Waterfront Industry Commission will visit the port this week, when the situation will be among the matters discussed.
