FIJIANS LEAD OTAGO ON FIRST INNINGS

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The Fiji tourists finished seven runs ahead of Otago in the first innings which the visitors cofnpleted at Carisbrook after an hour and a halt of play this morning in sunny weather. In that time seven wickets fell. • , j 4 The duel between H. J. Apted trying to get his century and L. J. Groves, the Otago slow bowler, was a feature of the morning’s play. Apted jumped right down the wicket to drive balls from Groves. It was another slow bowler, L. D. Smith, the Otago captain, however who had Apted caught behind the wicket when he was 14 runs short of his century. . Aria created a diversion by hitting a ball from Groves right out of the ground. After Apted’s dismissal the wickets fell quickly, the visitors being puzzled by the slow bowlers. Otago’s second innings began JI minutes before lunch.
