APPEAL BY OWNER OF HOWE IN AUCKLAND CUP CASE

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 12. The appeal of J. H. Marshall, owner of Howe, to the Racing Conference, against the decision of the Auckland District Committee, which confirmed the action taken by the Auckland Racing Club’s judicial committee in reversing the placings in the 1947 Auckland Cup and awarding the race to Balgowan, was opened in Wellington today, and after a long sitting was adjourned for a further hearing. H. V. Lunken, owner of King’s Ransom, has also appealed, and this is being heard in conjunction with Marshall’s appeal. The judges are Mr J. Macfarlane Laing (Masterton), Mr J. Graham (Feilding), and Mr P. A. O’Neill (Wanganui). Dr O. C. Mazengarb, K.C., is appearing for Marshall, Mr W. E. Leicester for Lunken, and Mr V. E. Meredith for the Auckland District Committee. Reminder Nominations for all events of the Westland Trotting Club close on Monday at 8 p.m. Trainer Retiring “Bill” Griffith, who has been training continuously for 40 years at Hastings, has handed in his licence. Among the more prominent horses he. trained were White Fang, winner of the C.J.C. Stewards’ Handicap; Bon Reve, winner of the Wellington Steeples and the July Steeples; and Limbohm, winner of the Grand National Hurdles.
