SUPPLY OF MILK TO SOUTHLAND SCHOOLS STOPPED
(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, March 12. The supply of milk to most of the schools in Southland where children have been receiving a daily issue has been stopped temporarily. This was confirmed by the Medical Officer of Health for Southland (Dr K. J. H. Davies) in response to an inquiry today, but he said he was not prepared to give reasons why the action had been taken or to comment on the matter. He did not know how long the suspension of supplies would continue.
The chairman of the Southland Education Board (Mr S. Rice) said the board had been advised by the Health Department that the scheme had been suspended in Southland until further notice. No reason for the suspension had been given. The board had received no complaints from parents and did not propose to take any further action. “I’ve no idea,” said one headmaster when asked if he knew why the scheme had been suspended. He had received notice from the Education Board that the supply to schools had ceased, but so far headmasters had not discussed the subject at their meetings.
