Spain And Membership Of United Nations
NEW YORK, November 12. The United Nations General Assembly’s Political Committee, overriding American objections, today voted fresh condemnation of Franco Spain-. The resolution adopted by the committee cleared the way for possible economic sanctions against Spain as long as General Franco remains dictator. : The resolution “expressed confidence that the Security Council will exercise, its responsibilities as soon as it considers the situation in Spain so requires.” These responsibilities could include an order that United Nations members sever diplomatic and economic relations with Spain, but the debate showed that most members are not ready to go so far at present. The vote was 29 to six. New Zealand, Britain,- France, China, and Russia were among the nations voting lor the resolution. Australia, the United States, and 18 other nations abstained. •
