SPORTING Ostentatious And Foxbay In Favour For Te Rapa

The Waikato Cup Handicap, of £l5OO, and the Guineas, of £6OO, will be the feature races on the Waikato Racing Club’s card at Te Rapa tomorrow. Ostentatious, who ran a promising third to Royal Charter and Ascot Lad in the Alison , Cup at Ellerslie last week, is entitled to be one of the favourites. His race in the Alison Cup was his first in open company, and the son of Dink and Lucy Lu won at his last three starts as a hack. Other fancied candidates may include Royal Charter, Silver Lighting and Pola.

Royal Charter may have been fortunate to beat Ascot Lad in the Alison Cup last week, but Ascot Lad is not in the Waikato Cup, and Royal Charter will again be one of the most favoured candidates. Precedency cannot be discarded, for the Tiderace gelding finished well into fourth place in the Alison Cup and won well in heavy going at the Avondale meeting in September. Silver Light-, ing did not start at Auckland last week, but on October 18 won over a mile and a quarter from Coogee and Ascot Lad on a slow track at Ellerslie. Pola showed a return to form in running second to Asqot Lad at the Whangarei meeting on November 1. This is a good field and the favourites may be Ostentatious, Royal Charter and Silver Lighting. Foxbay, who finished fast into second place behind Shirley Fox in the Great Northern Guineas, will, probably be the elect of backers in the Waikato Guineas, while Wonder Boy, a Rhodes Scholar three-year-old, has given promise of staying well. He has been in the money at his last three starts, including a good second to Huntore in the hack sprint at Ellerslie last week. The win-and-place system of betting will be used and the following horses should be well supported m their respective engagements:— , 11.0: Waimai Hurdles.—Pena Prince, British Mint, Foxbrae. 11.45: Bruntwood Hack. —First Division: Peter Nelson, Portland Bay.
