ALIENS IN THE DOMINION: 6565 NOW REGISTERED

Of a total of 6565 aliens registered in New Zealand at May 31 this year over half, or 54 per cent, were living in the Auckland and Wellington urban areas, according to the Abstract of Statistics for August. The concentrations in the Dominion’s two largest cities accounted for there being 85 pei’ cent, of the registered aliens in the North Island.

A less embracing definition of the term alien has been adopted since the end of the Second World War. The Abstract says that the original definition. included classes of people who, by their alien associations, were deemed to be aliens for the purposes of registration. These restrictions have now been removed, however, and persons no longer considered aliens have been removed from the register. The definition also excludes children under 15, persons holding diplomatic status, consuls or employees of legations and consulates, uniformed ■members of Allied Forces, Western Samoans and certain others specially exempted. There still remained at the end of May this year 115 Polish refugees over the age of 15, who were not registered and are not included! in the published figures. Chinese were by far the most numerous racial group in the registered aliens, with a total of 2617, consisting of 2222 males and 395 females. Jugoslavs were next, with 923, and Americans third, with 572. Other large groups were 421 Poles and 414 Germans, while there were 305 Italians, 174 Danes, 141 Dutch, 137 Swiss, 133 Greeks,, 116 Norwegians and I'll2 French. Russians totalled 40, and there were also 17 people from Estonia, eight from Latvia, and three from Lithuania. Of 39 people shown as Stateless, 20 were listed as having! been born in Austria.
