HOKITIKA RETIRING MAYOR IS HONOURED BY BOROUGH COUNCIL

(0.C.) HOKITIKA, This Day. The retiring Mayor of Hokitika, Mr A. R. Elcock, who is not seeking reelection was presented with a smoker’s companion and a silver, savoury dish for Mrs Elcock at the final meeting of the present council. The presentation was made by the deputy Mayor, Cr C. Caliari, who spoke appreciatively of the services Mr Eleock had given to the town during his six years as Mayor and 22 years as a member of the council. Cr Caliari and other councillors wished Mr Elcock a happy _ retirement. Councillors also eulogised the work of Cr Caliari, who, also, is not seeking re-election. The Mayor-elect, Mr A. E. Perry was present and was accorded a welcome by the Mayor and councillors. Kanieri Electric Limited, forwarded information regarding storm-water .flooding of its property in Weld street, pointing out that rainfall from 2 p.m. until midnight on February 15, 1946, caused so much flooding of its premises and plant that it could not have operated the stand-by plant for 15 hours, if it had been required. The company asked the council to take steps to ensure that the property and plant is not flooded by storm-water drainage from the northern part of the borough.—-Referred io the new council.

The Hokitika R.S.A. applied for a concession of half-rates on the R.S.A. hall property, and pointed out that the association was always pleased to give the council the use of the hall for civic functions. —The application was approved. The abattoir manager reported that the following stock was slaughtered during October:—l4 cows, 38 heifers, 55 bullocks, 46 sheep, 18 pigs. Mr D. Bradley was appointed heard slaughterman.
