Surprise Nomination For Greymouth Mayor : Local Body Candidates

The nomination of Mr F. L. Turley, secretary of the Westland Timber Workers’ Union, for the Mayoralty of Greymouth, in opposition to the Citizens’ Committee candidate, Mr F. F. Boustndge, was the biggest surprise in the announcement of the nominations which closed at noon today. Mr Turley has previously contested the Mayoralty and is a former member of Greymouth local bodies. He previously stood for Parliament. He has not been a member of a local body for some years. When no candidate was announced by the Labour Party it was generally considered that the Mayoralty would be a “walk-over” for Mr Boustridge, who is a sitting member of the Borough Council, and though Mr Turley’s name had been mentioned in some quarters his nomination was not announced until closing time.

The present Mayor of Greymouth (Mr F. A. Kitchingham), in accord with his intention expressed some time ago, is not seeking re-election. •An election for the Mayoralty will also be necessary at Kumara, where the present Mayor (Mr W. H. G. Stewart) is being opposed by Mr A. S. McLean.

New Mayor Of Runanga Mr G. E. English, president of the Runanga State Miners’ Union, will . be the new Mayor of Runanga, where the present Mayor (Mr E. Kennedy) is not seeking re-election. Mr Kennedy has been Mayor for two terms and was also a member of the Borough Council for a length.period. Mr English is a former member ot the council. The new Mayor of Hokitika will be Mr A. E. Perry (unopposed), succeeding Mr A. R. Elcock, who will not seek re-election. The Mayor ot Brunner (Mr W. N. Gutberlet) has been re-elected unopposed. Fifteen Nominations The Greymouth Borough Council election has drawn a number of candidates new to local bodies, and there are 15 nominations for the nine seats, including six of the sitting council. Three members of the present council, Messrs F. F. Boustridge (who is a candidate for Mayor), J. B. Kent, and T. Caldwell, are not seeking re-election. There are also newcomers to local body politics in the election for borough representatives on the Grey Hospital Board and the Grey Electric Power Board, among them Mr E. F. Chivers, who stood for the Westland seat at the last two Parliamentary elections. There will be both Citizens and. Labour Party “tickets” for the Greymouth local bodies, with a sprinkling of candidates who have been piominent in the Greymouth Ratepayers and Citizens’ Association.
