BASIS OF SELECTION OF HARBOUR BOARDS NOT TO BE ALTERED
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, October 23. Whatever amendments are to be made to legislation governing harbour boards in New Zealand, the basis of representation on them will not be altered. This was made clear By the new Minister of Marine (Mr F. Hackett) in an interview today. The Minister was asked whether, because of a previous recommenda-: tion. (made before he took office as Minister), it was proposed to eliminate from the membership of boards members who were not elected, but were appointed. He was emphatic that the present position would remain unchanged. • The original recommendation was that, to ensure that harbour boards were “truly democratic,” members appointed by those who received or paid dues—the representatives of shipping and ■ allied companies—should lose their seats. It was claims, ed after/this recommendation that if this were done, the Government-apT pointed representatives should also go off the boards.
