Nearly £3000 Estimated For Improvement Of Tainui Street Surface

A Christchurch firm has given the Greymouth Borough Council a rough estimate of £2872 for the “topping-up” of the surface of Tainui street with a bituminous carpet. This reply was received in reply to the council’s inquiry'on the subject after a lengthy debate at the September meeting. At a meeting of the Council last evening, after a brief discussion, the estimate was deferred for the consideration of the incoming council. The contractors stated that they did not recommend scarifying, and the estimate comprised £1530 for 510 tons of bituminous plant mix, £612. for railage to Greymouth, £5lO for laying the mixture, and £220 for a tacking coat, the council to supply a grader and a tractor-planer,, and the. labour under the supervision of one of the firm’s foremen.-

The contractors stated that the estimate of 510 tons was for 16,500 square yards at 701 b a square yard, which was the Main Highways Board specification for correcting particularly uneven surfaces. If necessary the firm could assist with plant but it did not recommend that its plant be used as delays due to weather conditions might prove costly. Cr P. would probably cost about £3OOO but it would last for at least 10 years, by which time the council might be able to see its way clear to go ahead with its big scheme for the street. Cr H. Hutchinson said that a good deal of preliminary work would probably be required before the treatment suggested by the firm could be applied. It was decided to defer consideration to the incoming council.
