AUTOMATIC STOKER TO BE PURCHASED FOR GREY GASWORKS

The Greymouth Borough Council decided last evening, on the recommendation of the gas manager (Mr A. J. Fairmaid) to purchase an automatic stoker, at an estimated cost of £2OO installed. Mr Fairmaid, in the course of his report embodying the recommendation, said that oh the basis of the average value in the yard of coke for the year ended March 31,- 1947, and the cost of coal in the yard for use as boiler fuel, the estimated increase iii the receipts to be obtained by the installation of a stoker, estimated to cost £2OO installed, was £44 15s 6d. A stoker would therefore be a sound investment, and would also be part of the larger installation planned by the council and would return a considerable part of its cost by the time that installation was made. The report added that the sale of gas in August, 1947, amounted to 4,782,000 cubic feet compared with 4,194,9000 cubic feet in August last year, an increase of 587,800 cubic feet. The cash receipts to the end of September, 1947, totalled £9,574 4s, compared with £9,804 2s 2d in the corresponding period of last year, a decrease of £229 18s 2d. During September a combination, a secondhand cooker, a copper, three waterheaters’and four fires were installed, the value of appliances amounting to £222 18s 6d, which required the extension of the reticulation system and consumers’ services- amounting to 301 ft and 454 ft respectively. Consequent upon the continued inclement weather the demand for gas was maintained at a relatively high level, the average daily make remaining in excess of 150,000 cubic feet per day, about three-quarters 1 of the winter demand. Copies of the report prepared for Mr Frank Kennedy, of Wellington, on proposed improvements to the gasworks were distributed to members, but the report was not discussed.

Real knowledge, in its progress, is the forerunner of liberality and enlightened toleration. —Lord Brougham.
