KEEN INTEREST IN VICTORIAN STATE ELECTION

(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Victorians were taking phenomenal interest in the forthcoming State election, said the electoral officer, Mr R. C. Nance. Electoral officers registered more than 20,000 voters yesterday—the closing date for enrolment. Mr Nance said that 43,000 more Victorians would vote than in the last State election two years ago. The Liberal and Country parties in Victoria have failed to agree on a “united-front” policy to fight the elections. The Liberal Party State executive rejected a proposal that the Liberals should not oppose Country Party candidates in-a number of important country seats. The Liberal Party will contest enough seats to form a Liberal Government if there is a landslide against Labour. The Liberal Party will endorse 51 candidates and the Country Party 28 Labour will endorse 56—a record number for a Victorian State election.
