PROWLER IN GIRLS’ SCHOOL SENT TO PRISON FOR MONTH

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. A stir caused at St Hilda’s Girl’s School in the early hours of Saturday morning by a nocturnal prowler was described in the Police Court today when Charles Robert Matheson, aged 27, a carpenter trainee, admitted a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond in that he was found without lawful excuse in the college premises. Chief Detective T. Y. Hall told the court that one of the senior boarders was awakened at 1 a.m. by a man pushing at the foot of her bed. She called out and the intruder made off. It was obvious from the accused’s explanations to the police, said the chief detective, that he had sinister intentions. His conduct had resulted in the entire school being aroused and the junior boarders especially had been very upset. Counsel for Matheson said his action was inexplicable. He was happily married and was a model husband. Justices sentenced the accused to one month’s imprisonment.
