CARDINAL GILROY ARRIVES FOR NEW ZEALAND VISIT

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 10. Accompanied by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Hobart (the Most Rev. E. V. Tweedie) and the Bishop of Port Augusta (the Most Rev. Dr T. McCabe), the Archbishop of Sydney (Cardinal Gilroy) arrived at Auckland by Tasman Empire Airways flying-boat today. He will consecrate the Most Rev. P. McKeefry as titular Archbishop of Dercos and CoadjutorArchbishop of Wellington at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday. Cardinal Gilroy was met at Mechanics Bay air base by the Bishoo of Auckland (the Most Rev. J. M. Liston), the Bishop 'of Christchurch (the Most Rev. P. F. Lyons), and the Coadjutor-Bishop of Dunedin (the Most Rev. H. J. O’Neill). His Eminence, accompanied by his secretary (the Rev. Father N. T. Kerr), will stay at Bishop’s House, Ponsonby, while hs is in Auckland.

Cardinal Gilroy will leave for Christchurch on Tuesday by aeroplane. From there he will go to Dunedin and then to Wellington, where a civic reception to him willbe attended by the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser) and the Chief Justice (Sir Humphrey O’Leary). He will leave for Australia from Auckland on Thursday, October 30. On Monday, October 27, his Eminence will bless the new Maori boys’ secondary college at Feilding. This will be officially opened in February of next year. Cardinal Gilroy recently returned from a visit to Canada where he toured the provinces with Cardinal McGuigan, of Toronto, and Cardinal Griffin, of Westminster. He returned to Australia at the beginning of October and spent the last 10 days at Hobart.

A two-day visit to Christchurch will be paid next week by Cardinal Gilroy. He will be given a solemn liturgical reception in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday morning Cardinal Gilroy will say Mass in the Cathedral at 7 o’clock, and at 10 o’clock he will be given a reception in the Cathedral grounds by the chilrdren of the diocese. Three thousand boys and girls, representing Catholic schools in Canterbury, South Canterbury, and the West Coast, will be present at the reception. In the afternoon a garden party will be held in the grounds of the Holy Name Seminary, Riccarton road. On Wednesday evening a civic reception will be accorded his Eminence in the Civic Theatre by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr E. H. Andrews). Cardinal Gilroy will leave for Dunedin on Thursday morning.
