McBREARTY ANNEXE MATRON: MISS JULIUS TO RETIRE

The resignation of the matron of the Maternity Mcßrearty Annexe, Miss Elsie Julius, was placed before the Grey Hospital Board at its meeting last evening, and accepted with regret. Miss Julius, who has been matron of the annexe since 1940, will retire in three months’ time.

' The vacancy on the medical staff of the hospital may be filled by a doctor from England, it was stated. Five applications had been made, according to the Health Department, and the board decided to hold a special meet- ; ing later this month to consider the applications. Following requests made by the matron, Miss N. P. Moffatt, on behalf of the nursing staff, the board decided: 1. That where resident staff are on sick leave on full pay, board allowance be . payable on the same basis as for annual leave, while they are not resident at the hospital. 2. That the question of increasing the amount of board allowance for nurses on leave and trained staff living out be held over pending the Superintendent’s report on nursing conditions. 3. That assistance to nurses’ riding school be granted at the rate of half-cost of horse feed, to a maximum of £52 per annum. (4) That an adequate supply of study books by Pearce be supplied for the free use of nurses, the books to remain the property of the board, unless purchased by the nurses. Two sets of twins were included in the 51 babies born at Mcßrearty Annexe last month, reported the matron, Miss E. Julius, who added that the ante-natal attendances numbered 111. The medical superintendent, Dr S. Barclay, in his report, stated that 151 patients had been admitted during the month and 154 discharged. Seven had died, leaving 76 remaining in hospital at the beginning of October. A total of 118 operations had been performed, while the bacteriological department had carried out 111 examinations. The radiography department had dealt with 1072 cases.
