RUNANGA DEBATERS COMPETE FOR THE AIRNS CUP

At the last meeting of the Runanga Debating Society the annual competition for the Airns Cup was held. The competition comprises a Shakespearean reading, a prose reading and an impromptu speech. Seven members took part and the judge was the Rev. W. S. Brettell. The winner was Mr J. Richmond with 82 points, Mr A. Keown 77 points was second and Mr R. McTaggart 75 points was third. The club has now closed for the season.,

At the opening of the Runanga bowling green for the 1947 season, there was a large attendance, including over 30 visitors from other clubs. The club president (Mr A. Taylor) welcomed the visitors and opened the green. Mr J. Stokes (president of the West Coast Centre) also spoke. Mrs J. Braithwaite rolled down the first kitty and Mrs Taylor the first bowl.
