BRUNNERTON MAYOR’S REQUEST FOR FULL TESTING OF DOBSON COAL AREA

The Mayor (Mr Gutberlet) reported to a meeting of the Brunner Borough Council on Saturday evening that because of the persistent rumours of the proposed transfer of the Mines Department’s boring plant from the Brunner district he had telegraphed the Minister of Mines (Mr McLagan) asking that the promises of previous Ministers of Mines that the whole of the Dobson area would be thoroughly tested before the plant was removed, be honoured. Mr Gutberlet added that he had not yet received a reply to his telegram. There was present at the meeting Messrs W. Gutberlet, G. Eder, Morgan, Harper and Quinn. The Mayor paid a tribute to the services given to the district and the country by the late Minister of Transport (Mr O’Brien) and a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives.

An application by the Dobson School Committee for the loan of hall seats for its Christmas-tree function was granted. Donations of £5 were made to both the Dobson and Taylorville Domain Boards.

Permission was received from the district engineer of railways to proceed with proposed improvements to the Ohau street railway crossing, at Dobson.

Lease Of Hall

The borough solicitors advised that the agreement for the lease of the Wallsend hall to Westland Talkies had been completed. The Municipal' Association forwarded details of the new scale of fees proposed for returning officers at the coming elections, and the method of applying them.—lt was resolved to apply to the director of stabilisation for permission to apply the new scale. Building permits for work valued at £Bl5 were granted subject to inspector’s approval. The town clerk reported that the currant year’s rate payment for the first month of the period had reached the high per cent, of 76.49 of the total struck for the 1947-48 period. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs C. E. Broad of Invercargill are visiting Mr J; Smeaton, Dobson. Mrs Wootton, of Taylorville, is visiting Christchurch.
