LATE NEWS THEFT FROM SHIP AT GREYMOUTH:

THREE MEN FINED

Arrested as they left the Gabriella carrying articles from the ship’s stores, shortly after midnight last night, two Greymouth men; Robert James Sweetman and Oswald Ernest Mutch, together with a member of the crew of the vessel, Arthur Neville Goodmanson, appeared before Messrs J. B. Hood and J. H. North J.P.’s in the Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, on a series of charges. Sugar, butter, jam, honey, golden syrup, tea and a tablecloth were involved in the offences, to which all three pleaded guilty. The total value was £1 17s Id. The accused were each fined £ 10, the seaman for stealing the goods and the two Greymouth men for receiving. • A full account of the proceedings will be published tomorrow.

The prices of butter, cheese and milk products would rise shortly, said the Prime Minister, Mr Chifley., adding that this was the result of the Government’s decision to grant, the dairy farmers an extra 4fd per lb of commercial butter. Mr Chifley said the Government would meet this payment until it had decided how much of the increase should be passed on to the consumers. The companies then had to demand additional quantities to maintain the output. JUGOSLAVDIPLOMAT HELD IN CHILE (Rec. 3.5 p.m.) BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 13. The spokesman for the Jugoslav legation confirmed today that Endrej Cunja, formerly Jugoslav charge d’Affaires in Chile was being held in the central police station. The Jugoslav Minister had tried so far unsuccessfully to see President Peron on Cunja’s deportation.

The Syrian Government, in a declaration of policy to the Syrian Parliament, said Syria would unconditionally support the Arab League in accepting only the independence of Palestine and the establishment of an Arab Government there. Seamen Rescued From Missing Minesweepers (Rec. 3.10 p.m.) HONOLULU, October 13. A Navy patrol boat today rescued near Palmyra atoll the three seamen who had been adrift on the missing minesweepers for 20 days. They were in good health and needed no medical attention. The four minesweepers, which were lashed together, drifted away while their towing tug was refuelling at Palmyra. Earthquake Centre - Not Yet Determined (P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Dominion observatory said today that- until full reports of the shake are received from other recording . observatories, the centre cannot be determined, although preliminary reports indicate that this would be about 400 miles from Wellington.
