Mr. Doyle Replies

Sir,—The West Coast Trades Council*has not the lauthority to discipline individual members of affiliated unions, nor does it desire to have such authority. The affiliated union is the only authority in this matter. As to the question whether Thursday night’s meeting was in order dr not, this also is a question for the union to deal with, and I suggest tb Mr Ross that he act accordingly. In case any member of the A.S.R.S. who attended Thursday’s meeting is under any misapprehension as to what I did say, I will repeat it. Here it is: “I have been informed by members of. miners’ unions in the Grey Valley that if any of their members break the boycott they will be out Of the union. As regards the Watersiders’ Union, of which I am president, I am not at liberty to divulge the union’s business, but ( I would point out that my union, like other unions, has a set of rules for conducting the union’s business. These rules provide for penalties for breaking union decisions, and as chairman I must adhere to these rules Whether I wish to or not.” I cannot be held responsible for any interpretation Mr Ross may give to my statement. —Yours, etc., J. DOYLE, President, West Coast Trades Council. Greymouth, Oct. 12.
