N.Z. PRIMARY PRODUCE MARKET IN BRITAIN
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, October 12. The Dairy Products Marketing Commission so far had no intention of discussing arrangements with Britain for the sale of primary produce beyond the 1949-50 season before the middle of next year, said the chairman (Mr ML Marshall) in a telephone conversation from Wellington. Mr Marshall was asked to comment on a report that Australia was endeavouring to negotiate an agreement- for a 10-year guaranteed market in the United Kingdom to ensure the sale of her output after vastly expanding her production programme. Mr Marshall said he knew nothing of the Australian proposal. Arrangements for the sale of New Zealand’s primary products were settled up to the 1949-50 season. Discussions on any extension after that period would take place about June or July of next year. “I think there is a lot of merit in the Australian suggestion for a 10year guaranteed market,” . said the Dominion president of Federated Farmers (Mr W. N. Perry). “Farmers in New Zealand are being asked to increase their production of foodstuffs to help Great Britain in her hour of trial, and I am sure they will respond to the utmost of their ability. After expanding our production while a shortage exists we do not want to be faced in future years with a surplus of food on the British market, mainly because of increased quantities coming from foreign countries. We must not forget that before the war quantitive restriction was placed on our meat entering Britain.”-
