COURT SETS ASIDE U.S. NAVY SENTENCE

(Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK, Sept. 26

Federal Judge Clarence Galston today set aside the navy court-martial conviction of Chief Signalman Harold Hirshberg on charges of having maltreated fellow prisoners of war in a Japanese prison camp in the Philippines. ■ Judge Galston ruled that the navy lacked jurisdiction to try Hirshberg, who had been honourably discharge:; from the navy before the trial and had re-enlisited. A court martial sentenced Hirshberg on August 29 to 10 months’ goal and a dishonourable discharge.
